SPOTLIGHT ON CREATIVES: KARYN LIM (SINGAPORE)

Photographer Rachel Loh invited us into part of her creative world as she brings together talented friends from Singapore and South Korea to share about themselves and their works, while also capturing our latest collection in their own unique way.

Please introduce yourself and what you do.

Hi! I’m Karyn. I design accessories, objects, and furniture for our contemporary lifestyles. I’ve been using recycled plastic waste for my ‘So Plast!c’ series; small tables, vessels, lamp. I also create bags and jewellery using woven metal or metal-like material in an exploration titled ‘Lightness’.

Karyn wears Norah Dress in Midnight , pairing with her handcrafted sling bag.

Your jewellery metal work is so intricate and gentle, do you think that’s the way you approach life too?

I do hope so! A lot of who we are and what we stand for manifests in our work. I think as creators, we sometimes don’t see it, or can’t control it, and perhaps we shouldn’t, as that freedom is what develops authenticity and personality in our work.

Most of ‘Lightness’ is entirely hand-crafted. The special thing about handmade is that each detail has the touch and thought of a human behind it. There will always be small irregularities that are beautiful in the organic way that nature is.

Karyn styles Jamie Elastic Waist Trousers in Cocoa , with her own vintage top and handcrafted bag.

Has it been easy to combine design and art together in your jewellery and bags?

At the root of it is a fascination with the materials I use the way it is constructed, the forms it could take, its flow, and how it looks on our human body. It's a pursuit of possibilities with a dash of practicality.

What small ways are you using to go deeper into your craft?

The key things are to have fun, stay curious, and be open-minded! I’ve also been doing more collaborations and am constantly exploring new materials and techniques. I’ve also been doing more collaborations and am constantly exploring new materials and techniques.
