SPOTLIGHT ON CREATIVES: CRYSTAL LEE (SINGAPORE)

Photographer Rachel Loh invited us into part of her creative world as she brings together talented friends from Singapore and South Korea to share about themselves and their works, while also capturing our latest collection in their own unique way.

Please introduce yourself and what you do.

I’m Crystal, a textile artist and natural dyer. I run Project Coal, where I explore colours and textures through natural dyeing and embroidery.

I love how you recently used Singapore’s sea almond tree leaves as a natural dye. What other possibilities do you see in the resources we have here in your craft?

There’s still so much to explore in our local plants, food waste, and even medicinal herbs. Fallen mango leaves, coconut husks, and discarded onion skins from the market all have the potential to create beautiful dye colours. In Singapore, we can only collect fallen plants since it’s illegal to forage from existing trees, but I’m still discovering and learning what our local plants can offer.

What is your routine before you start diving into your process of each piece?

The process usually starts with a rough vision and a few sketches. I make sure I’m in a clear headspace before starting a project. I try not to overthink it and just go with my gut, allowing space for the outcome to reveal and shape itself.

How do you find ways to slow down in Singapore’s busy climate?

Meditation is something I do to clear my mind before starting the day. It helps me stay calm, focused, and a little more grounded as I move through the busyness of the day.
